Ingredients

  • 1 block of tofu
  • Olive oil, for baking
  • Salt and cornstarch, for coating tofu
  • Green onions and sesame seeds, for garnish

For the sauce:

  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Chili flakes, to taste
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch (3 teaspoons for a thicker sauce)

Steps

1

Prepare the Tofu

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Break the tofu into small, uneven pieces with your hands. Aim for bite-sized chunks that vary in shape and size.
  3. Toss the tofu pieces in olive oil, salt, and a light coating of cornstarch.
  4. Arrange the tofu on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  5. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the tofu is crispy and golden brown.

2

Make the Sauce

  1. While the tofu is baking, prepare the sauce. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, maple syrup, apple cider vinegar, ketchup, vegetable broth, minced garlic, and cornstarch until well combined.

3

Combine Tofu and Sauce

  1. Once the tofu is done baking, heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat.
  2. Pour the sauce into the skillet and bring it to a simmer.
  3. Add the baked tofu cubes to the skillet, gently tossing them in the sauce until evenly coated.
  4. Continue cooking for 2-3 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened and the tofu is heated through.

4

Serve

  1. Transfer the Tofu General Tao’s to a serving dish.
  2. Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds for added flavour and texture.
